Is it not funny how no matter how cold it is, we still do not mind eating out? Well, I guess it can only be a good thing that there are restaurants offering some great winter specials throughout the country.
These are some of the great places to eat out at:
District Six Eatery
Those who have been to Cape Town’s colourful Bo-Kaap quarter will instantly recognize the same vibrant vibe at District Six Eatery, which celebrates Cape Malay cuisine in the heart of Johannesburg’s Emmarentia suburb. The specials for this season kicked off in June. Featuring a rich and delicious vegetable soup for R40 per serving and as soon as the waterblommetjies arrive from the Cape they immediately feature on the menu in a rich mutton stew for R155 until the end of July. Other true winter offers includes trotters-and-tripe stew served with white and yellow rice R100 and lamb tomato bredie R125.
Hard Rock Café
Enjoy fresh, delicious American cuisine at Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg. Located where Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square meet and make up the largest retail complex in South. This winter they will once again offer diners a World Burger Tour which will celebrate four different cities of the world, each with a specific burger that showcases the core flavours of the region and is served with fries. Winter Warmers are new on the winter menu, featuring a pie of the day R99 or soup of the day R49 served with a slice of toast and butter. Africa, you’ll find glamorous shops, top fashion outlets, and of course, delectable dining options.
Jenda restaurant and wine bar brings a new dimension of comfort and relaxed dining to Fourways. On a cold winter’s evening, pop in before or after a show and enjoy a mixed cheese fondue and baguette R75. In keeping with the fondue theme, you might end your meal with a Lindt chocolate fondue with biscotti, marshmallows, strawberries and honeycomb – a bargain at R99 for two.
Upscale and creative European-style cuisine, with local influences, in a modern space with terrace. South African Restaurant of the Year 2013. De Kloof is running a set lunch menu from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 12 noon to 3pm. Pay R195 for three courses, R148 for two courses, and R100 if you only order the main. The starter is a bread board with a selection of three canapes. For mains, choose between roasted aubergine, milk-poached chicken breast, or free range beef fillet strips that comes with a sesame seed bread roll and sweet potato chips. To finish your meal, try the white chocolate cheesecake with peppermint crisp dessert and dulche de leche ice cream or a rum baba with raspberry ice cream.
If you want to make delectable gourmet burgers find a few accomplished chefs to design your burgers. Then use free-range and organic meat when possible and make all your sauces fresh and from scratch, even your ketchup. This is served with only the finest craft beers & ciders. Then scour the world looking for the perfect wines at every price point. Only then have you earned the right to call your burgers gourmet. Get two burgers for the price of one all day on Tuesdays until 30 September.
Greedy Buddha aims to offer their guests a refreshing and unique approach to dining in SA. They are not an Asian restaurant but their menu and food philosophy is inspired by the tastes and flavours of South East Asia. Enjoy lunch at Greedy Buddha and receive 20% off the total cost. This offer is valid until 30 July. Grab a few friends this winter and sip on a cocktail of your choice from the Cocktail Terrace and receive 50% off. The offer is valid Tuesday to Sunday during lunch time only. Lunch is from 12 noon to 3pm.
Olive and Oil
From as far afield as a little village in Greece, down to the rugged coastline of Morocco, the Mediterranean has been the biggest influence and inspiration for the food and hospitality for which Olive & Oil has become renowned. Pastas are all R74.95 on Monday, and for a Tuesday a date night platter is only R79.95 per couple. Sunday is family day at Olive & Oil, where one child eats free from the children’s menu with a parent eating from the à la carte menu. A leisurely lunch special incorporates a two-course meal R130 or three-course meal R140 with a complimentary glass of wine.
Arnold’s on Kloof
Arnolds has won more friends than any other restaurant in Cape Town and enjoys wide acclaim for its stunning breakfast. Founded in 1998 and located opposite the historic Mount Nelson Hotel in Kloof Street, Arnolds has an outdoor seating area with views of Table Mountain as well as a warm and relaxed dining area. Arnold’s has a number of specials to look forward to. Order their Early Bird breakfast special before 7am from Monday to Friday and pay R20. Also try their all-day chef’s breakfast (runs until 5pm) with a cappuccino, tea or orange juice. They also offer a complimentary cup of coffee or tea with any slice of cake R45 ordered between 10am and 5pm. Finally, their Stew-for-Two special consists of a beef goulash with your choice of mash or couscous, plus you receive a free bottle of house wine R135.
Le Bar and Lounge
The New York style Le Bar and Lounge, situated in the lobby of Southern Sun Cape Sun is located in Cape Town’s city centre and is a popular meeting place for hotel guests and local Capetonians alike. Enjoy a steaming bowl of the chef’s speciality soup of the day for R65 per person, served with freshly baked bread. Lunch is served between 12.30pm and 3pm. This special runs from Monday to Friday and is valid until 31 August.
If you can not see the sea from where you are sitting, then your view is being obscured by the buxom body of a beautiful babe. The ground floor location puts it on eye-level with the beach, and whether you choose to feel the sea spray on your face on a sunny afternoon, or prefer the cosy intimacy of the interior, you can be assured an eyeful of the luring ocean blue. Enjoy two courses for R220 or the three-course option at R260 per person. This special runs until 1 September 2016.
There’s no reason why you should not indulge in some good food, especially given that the weather is likely to dampen your mood anyway. So why not lift your spirits right?
